Dr Nadine Umutoni Wa Shema is an experienced medical doctor, public health specialist, and community development leader with over 18 years of professional experience across Australia and internationally. As the Co-founder of the Great Lakes Agency for Peace and Development (GLAPD), Dr Nadine has dedicated her career to supporting vulnerable communities, particularly refugees and culturally diverse families, to settle, thrive, and achieve their goals. Her work has spanned health coordination, program leadership, research, policy advisory, and direct community engagement. Dr. Nadine has worked with major institutions including Westmead Children's Hospital, UNSW, STARTTS, the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), and UNHCR. She has led national health programs, supervised multidisciplinary teams, secured significant grant funding, and contributed to influential research on migrant health, family well-being, and community integration. Her professional journey is grounded in both clinical expertise and deep cultural understanding. Fluent in English, French, Swahili, Kinyarwanda, and Lingala, Dr. Nadine is passionate about ensuring that individuals and families from diverse backgrounds receive services that are respectful, culturally safe, and empowering. Through A1 Empathy Pty Ltd, Dr. Nadine brings together her medical knowledge, leadership experience, and commitment to advocacy to provide compassionate, person-centred disability support services. Her vision is to create an organization where empathy is not just a value, but a daily practice ensuring every participant feels heard, respected, and supported to live with dignity and independence.
